Nalco Holds HAZOP Training in Asia Pacific

As part of Nalco’s plan to avoid all potential accidents in employees’ and contractors’ work environments, two Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) training sessions were recently conducted in Singapore and Shanghai for members of the Nalco Global Equipment Solutions (NGES) and Manufacturing teams.

HAZOP was introduced as a systematic review of a process to identify safety-related hazards and to quantify their associated risk so that appropriate safeguards can be implemented to reduce those risks to an acceptable level. This type of risk assessment suits new equipment designs, new applications, new processes or whenever significant operations changes are made. HAZOP studies ensure that hazards resulting in injuries, equipment damage or environmental damage are identified and assessed for their severity and likelihood of occurring. According to the identified risks, appropriate safeguards are recommended and need to be implemented to minimize the risk level.

"HAZOP studies are team events involving people from different departments, such as Equipment Solutions, Supply Chain, Marketing, Sales, R&D and SH&E," said Gisela Putral, Safety, Health and Environment Manager, Asia Pacific. "Instead of hiring a third party for this type of training, we decided to leverage the knowledge and experience of a subject matter expert within our global corporate SH&E team. This way we could ensure that the training content was relevant to Nalco’s processes and also minimize costs without sacrificing quality of training.”
