Erik Fyrwald Participates at World Economic Forum

Erik Fyrwald participated in a panel at the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Tianjin, China this week. He joined government and business from the United States, China, Vietnam and Bulgaria and the Hrvard Business School to talk about the challenges of doing business in the “Next Frontier,” countries that will present the next generation of opportunities beyond emerging markets like the BRIC countries. The International Monetary Fund forecasts these frontier markets, which have lower levels of development, will grow twice as fast as the emerging countries. Erik shared some of the lessons Nalco has learned in the emerging markets and discussed the challenges and potential rewards of establishing and doing business in these markets.

Erik also participated in a working session with WEF's Water Initiative leadership. They, along with government and nongovernmental organization (NGO) leaders from China and India, discussed how to address the huge water challenges in the rapidly growing economies of Asia. Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, Chairman of Nestlé and leader of the Water Initiative, spoke about how the water crisis has become the number one issue for the world according to a vote of all government, business, academic and NGO leaders involved with the WEF. He also said that while the global warming issue is of concern, having adequate quantity and quality of water for drinking, food and industry use is a much higher priority for the planet now. Nalco has become a partner in this global leader effort to address water challenges.
