Two Nalco Paper Technologies Selected as Finalists for 10th annual Chicago Innovation Awards

Nalco has had two of its Paper Industry technology innovations selected as among the 75 nominee finalists for the 2011 Chicago Innovation Awards. The ten winners will be announced Tuesday, November 8th and celebrated at an event at Chicago’s Harris Theater that evening.

The Chicago Innovation Awards, celebrating its 10th year, is the Chicago region’s foremost recognition of the most innovative new products or services brought to market or to public service each year. There were more than 400 nominees for the 2011 Chicago Innovation Awards, representing an increase of more than 60 percent over the past two years.

Nalco has two of its Paper Industry innovations being considered as finalists: Nalco Crepe Analysis Toolbox (NCAT) technology and OxiPRO® Technology for Deposit Control.

Paper tissue and towel makers use a process called creping to affect the softness, absorbency and strength of their paper. The final product qualities needed for paper can vary depending on the intended end use, whether as facial tissue, toilet paper, paper towels and wrapping paper.

NCAT technology is the first commercially available technology that can quickly analyze surface structures formed in a sheet of paper by the creping process, providing the papermaker quicker quality feedback that allows increased production while ensuring product specifications are met. NCAT technology provides a user-friendly instrument that can quickly analyze sheet surface characteristics in less than a minute to ensure the final product will achieve softness and absorbency targets.

OxiPRO Technology for Deposit Control provides enhanced control of microbial growth and deposit-formation in papermaking systems. These contaminants can produce defects in the paper such as holes and spots that force production shutdowns and cause product spoilage. Nalco OxiPRO technology uses a combination of proactive monitoring tools, individually tailored chemistries, and local application expertise to reduce these sheet defects, improve runnability and boost uptime for papermaking machines. The result provides papermakers with increased machine efficiency and lower total cost of operation.

“The most important message of the Chicago Innovation Awards is one of confidence and courage,” said Thomas D. Kuczmarski, co-founder with Chicago journalist Dan Miller of the awards. “The economy is challenging but each nominee believes the simple truth that a powerful new product will find a rewarding market and has the courage to pursue their vision.”

Each year ten winners are chosen from among the 75 finalists by a panel of judges reflecting a cross section of Chicago’s business community. In addition, each of the 75 finalists is automatically in the running for the annual “People’s Choice Award,” selected through online balloting at

The finalists are also each awarded a scholarship to attend a day-long executive education program titled “The Practical Innovator”, taught at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
